Area rugs

After purchasing their first area rug, many people are afraid to walk on the rug or place it in an area of high traffic for fear of wearing them out or diminishing their beauty. This is a misconception as area rugs in fact tend to be very durable and can retain their beauty for centuries if properly cared for.

To prolong the age and beauty of your new Area Rug, follow our recommendations for its care and maintenance:

- Vacuum on a regular basis to remove the dirt particles that can wear down the pile fibers. For a rug in a high traffic area, you should vacuum it at least once a week. We also suggest that once every two or three years you have your Area Rug thoroughly cleaned by a reputable rug cleaner. Your local Sears Floor Covering Centre can recommend one in your area.

- Turn your area rug(s) periodically to ensure even exposure to UV sunlight and wear. Those factors contribute to making your area rugs appear more worn; however if regularly rotated this can enhance the natural beauty of your area rug by adding a feeling of history and the passage of time.

- A non-slip underlay will not only help to keep your rug in place but it will also add softness underfoot, help to reduce premature wear, pile crushing and soiling. You will also prevent wrinkling, creeping and slipping which could be dangerous.

The use of the following spot removal process will help you to avoid staining in the case that something is spilled on your area rug.

  • Sponge off the area with a clean cloth
  • Pour a solution of a clear, non-bleach dishwashing detergent and water on the area.
  • Rinse with water and sponge.
  • Leave to dry.

For best results, the spill must be removed right away.
