Home Carpet Maintenance
To prolong the age and beauty of your new carpet, follow our recommendations for its care and maintenance:
- Particularly on stairs, a quality underpad will help to give your carpet better resilience, add comfort underfoot and help extend the life of your carpet.
- Heavy furniture should be moved occasionally to avoid pile crushing.
- Use floor protectors that are designed for carpet that evenly distribute the weight of tables, chairs and other furniture. Additionally, you should not have chairs or other pieces of furniture with rollers or castors directly on the floor without appropriate protection.
- Reduce your carpet's exposure to direct sunlight by using blinds, shades or awnings. The UV rays may cause fading and/or discolouration of your carpet.
- Vacuuming on a regular basis is the most important step in maintaining your new carpet. Proper vacuuming helps to remove the dirt particles that will otherwise, when walked on, work their way down to below the surface where they can cause damage to the carpet fibres. A good quality vacuum is important as an inexpensive one may not effectively remove the dirt that is embedded in your carpet.
- We recommend having your carpet professionally cleaned regularly every 12-18 months to remove the residues that vacuums don't remove. Left unchecked, these soils resulting from cooking vapours, air pollution and tracked-in dirt will begin to attract and hold the dry soil causing gradual but substantial dulling of colours. Your local Sears Floor Covering Centre can recommend a professional carpet cleaner in your area that has the experience, knowledge and equipment that will help to keep your carpet's appearance fresh and help extend its lifespan.
- Many carpets are treated with special finishes to resist soil and stains. However, remember that no carpet is stain-proof. Stain-resistant finishes such as STAINMASTER® , R2X T Stain and Soil Repellent System , Wear-Dated® , and Anso® hold the spill on the carpet fibres surface allowing some time to absorb the liquid. Use spot removal techniques before the spill has a chance to penetrate the fibres. The longer a spill is left unattended, the more difficult it will be to remove.
- Before you use a carpet cleaning product, pre-test a small, inconspicuous area to ensure that the solution will not damage the carpet or its dyes. With a clean, white, absorbent cloth or paper towel gently work in the cleaning agent from the edges of the spot to the centre. Blot thoroughly, and repeat until the spot no longer transfers to the cleaning cloth. Use clean water to remove any remaining cleaning agent, and absorb remaining moisture with paper towels. When completely dry, brush or vacuum the pile to restore its texture.
- INTEGRITY®/MD carpet by Sears also offers advanced stain and soil protection for six years from the date of installation during normal indoor household use. To maintain the warranty, the carpet must be properly maintained from the date of installation and must have been professionally cleaned with 30 days of any warranty claim. All warranties protecting against stain and soiling have certain exceptions and your salesperson will be happy to explain them to you.
- With your busy schedule, you will want flooring that is warm and comfortable to come home to, and carpet fits that bill. By following our recommendations for regular vacuuming and the immediate removal of stains or spills you will help keep your carpet looking beautiful for years to come.
