Laminate Flooring Maintenance
To help prolong the age and beauty of your new laminate floor, follow our recommendations for its care and maintenance:
- Do not use rubber or foam backed plastic mats as they may discolour the floor.
- Always use soft fabric-faced furniture leg protectors (never plastic) under furniture legs and be sure to clean them regularly, as dirt can become embedded in them. The use of floor protectors will help minimize indentations and scratches from heavy objects. Move heavy appliances or furniture by sliding them on a piece of carpet.
- Keep your pets nails trimmed to help avoid scratches on the floor.
- The use of runners and area rugs is recommended for high traffic areas.
- It is important to maintain the relative humidity in your home between 35% and 65% throughout the year to minimize the natural expansion and contraction of laminate. In periods of inclement weather, try to avoid excessive exposure to water.
- Always wipe up spills immediately. Never let a liquid spill to remain on your laminate floor. Use a damp cloth to blot spills and spots. For tough spots such as oil, paint or marker use acetone on a clean white cloth then wipe with a damp cloth. Never use strong ammonia-based, oil based or abrasive cleaners, waxes or polishes. Never use steel wool or scouring powders as these will damage your floor.
- Do not wash or wet mop your floor with soap, water or any other liquid cleaning agent as it could cause swelling, warping, delamination and joint-line separation which could damage the floor.
- On a weekly basis and when necessary, vacuum or sweep the floor to remove any loose dirt and dust that can scratch or dull your floor's finish. We recommend using a laminate flooring cleaner and a terry cloth mop head. Your local Sears Floor Covering Centre can help you choose the appropriate floor cleaner.
- Laminate is one of the hottest trends in the flooring industry because of its relative low maintenance and its’ many added values. By following our recommendations for your laminate floor maintenance you will have a beautiful, durable floor for many years to come.
